Math help in Katy, TX.

A good memory is a great asset when it comes to academic achievement, so it should be a goal for every child. It was long thought that you either have a good memory or you don’t, but the brain has since been proved to be highly adaptable, so here at The Tutoring Center in Katy we would like to offer a number of tips to improve your child’s memory (although there’s no reason for you not to take advantage of them too!).

Brain food

Your child’s diet has a marked impact on every area of their life, and this includes their memory. Be sure to provide your child with lots of green vegetables, citrus fruits and especially blueberries, as studies have shown that the flavonoids present in these foods help cognitive function. Ensure that your child’s diet is not too rich in saturated and hydrogenated fats and instead focus on providing unsaturated fats rich in omega 3; good fat sources include nuts and oily fish.

Healthy body, healthy mind

Exercise isn’t just important for your child’s physical health, it’s also crucial for their emotional and cognitive health. Studies indicate that regular exercise has a positive effect on overall mental performance, including recall. A good rule of thumb is to aim for an hour of physical activity every day.

Keep calm

Stress has been shown to have an adverse effect on overall mental function, and especially on memory processing, so make sure your child has plenty of opportunities to relax. Take the time to talk to them regularly about any problems they may be having so that they don’t spend time worrying.

Sleep on it

A bad night’s sleep can leave one barely functioning, a feeling I’m sure we’re all familiar with, and this is even more true of children than it is of adults. Sleep is extra-important for children because their brains are still developing, so be sure that they’re not regularly missing their bedtime. The younger your child, the more sleep they need, but a good estimate for 6 - 12 year olds is between 9 and 11 hours a night.

Now that your child has the memory of an elephant, it’s likely that they’re performing well academically. To help make sure this is the case, follow our guide to preparing for SAT. To absolutely ensure that your child has every opportunity to flourish, The Tutoring Center in Katy offers free diagnostic assessments that will identify any academic areas in which your child may benefit from support. Our expert tutors are on hand to deliver any assistance needed with reading, grammar, math and more. Call 832-437-0635 to find out more.
