Baking to Improve Your Child's Motor and Cognitive Skills

Spending time together enables your child to achieve appropriate developmental skills and gain confidence. It is important to interact with your child. Cooking together provides an opportunity to do both.

Motor Skills

While cooking, motor skills are engaged. Motor skills can be involved when pots have to be lifted with two hands, or dense ingredients have to be folded, mixed or stirred. Reaching overhead may be needed if ingredients are stored above on shelves. Fine motor skills can be worked on as well. Many cooking tasks require bilateral integration or using both hands together and crossing the midline. Stirring, whisking and related activities help build upper extremity strength and grasp. This helps with coordination as well. Baking in offers an excellent opportunity to develop hand and wrist skills. Many baking recipes require specific methods for the combining of ingredients. Each technique demands a different movement of the hand, wrist, and arm. These movements are repetitive and help to improve coordination. The resistance of the batter demands muscle strength. Children who have grasp or graphomotor (handwriting issues) can especially benefit from baking. Cooking tools, like spoons and spatulas, provide input into the arches of the hand.

Cognitive Skills

The entire process of cooking or baking fosters cognitive skills. Your child will need to read, follow directions, monitor time, remember steps, sequence and show judgment. They need to understand which signs indicate undercooking or overcooking. If they help prepare dinner, they need to manage time so that a variety of foods can be prepared at once. This family time is great for toddlers to teens. It brings the family together, provides the quality time, improves learning and developmental skills, helps build independence, and can bridge the generation gap by carrying on family traditions. New York Cheese Cake

This cake can be prepared with the help of children, and they will be thrilled to share this dessert with the whole family! This cake is not only delicious, but it also has a looks great and has a rich lemon flavor.

  • 200 gr. of graham cookies
  • 60 gr. of butter
  • 500 gr. fresh cheese
  • 100 gr. Fresh cream
  • Four eggs, separate yolks from whites
  • 125 gr. of sugar
  • One teaspoon lemon juice
Crumble cookies into small pieces and put grind in a blender along with the melted butter until it forms a crumbly mass. Use this mixture to create your cake's bottom. Use baking paper to cover the bottom of the mold and the sides of the round 8x8 pan so the cake does not stick. Your child should press the dough down with their fingers. You must preheat to 300°F and then put the pan with cookie crust in. Let bake for 10 minutes and remove it from the oven and leave to cool.

Just put the egg yolks with sugar in a blender or use a mixer and beat until a frothy cream is made, and then add the cheese. Keep whisking and add the cream with the lemon zest. Stir and add a little lemon juice. In a different bowl, beat egg whites until stiff to add them to the mixture little by little with a spatula from the bottom up. Do this very gently so that air does not come out. You want the whites to stay fluffy and stiff. Then empty the entire mixture into the mold of the baked crust and bake at 325°F for 15 minutes and then lower the temperature to 200°F for another 45 minutes. Turn the oven off and let the cake rest inside until approximately room temperature

A Tip for Your Young Chef

Have your child prepare the cake one day in advance and keep refrigerated overnight. Remove the cake from the refrigerator an hour before eating. The taste is even better! They can accompany the cake with a strawberry, blueberry or caramel sauce.
